Speak Out for Public Transit
at SEPTA Hearings

SEPTA will be holding hearings this week and next on the draconian budget it has prepared in the event that it receives no additional funds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We urge everyone to attend the hearings and demand new, dedicated funding for SEPTA. Tell the hearing examiners why public transit is so important! Tell them how SEPTA can improve. But most of all, tell them that you understand the real source of the funding crisis, the failure of Governor Rendell and the General Assembly to provide adequate, dedicated funding for SEPTA and the other transit agencies in the state.

The dates for the hearings are below:

PTC Invites Governor Rendell and Legislative Leaders to SEPTA Hearings

The Philadelphia Transit Campaign has invited Governor Rendell, Republican Speaker of the House John Perzel, House Democratic Leader William DeWeese, Republican Senate President Pro Tem Robert Jubelirer, and Senate Democratic Leader Robert Mellow to attend the hearings on the SEPTA budget. In our letter of invitation we wrote, "SEPTA is, by law, forced to propose a balance budget and also required to hold hearings on that budget. Because SEPTA, a state entity, does not receive adequate funding from the Commonwealth, it is left to bear the brunt of public criticism at these hearings. While we have our differences with SEPTA, responsibility for public transportation in our region ultimately rests on you and the leaders of the House of Representatives and Senate."

Add your voice to the PTC. Write, call, or email your state legislator and Governor Rendell, demanding new, dedicated funding for public transportation. You can find out your state legislator Pennsylvania General Assembly webstite. We will post sample letters at our website in a few days.

PTC Plans Second Harrisburg Rally

We will be returning to Harrisburg for a second rally and a day of lobbying for public transportation on Wednesday, November 10. Free transportation will be available. Details about the trip will be on our website soon.
